What this tool tells you
Comparing a salary job to an hourly rate (or vice versa) is the first step in deciding whether freelancing pays. This calculator converts between the two using your weeks and hours worked per year.
How the math works
Enter the amount, choose the direction, and set weeks and hours per week. The calculator divides (salary mode) or multiplies (hourly mode) by total annual hours to produce the equivalent figure.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert salary to hourly?
Divide your annual salary by the total paid hours in a year (weeks × hours per week). A $60,000 salary at 40 hours × 52 weeks is about $28.85/hour.
Should I compare gross or net?
Compare on the same basis. A W-2 salary also carries employer-paid taxes and benefits; as a contractor you pay self-employment tax and buy your own benefits, so gross-to-gross understates the gap.
